Aphera Alternatives
Aphera is a RAW photo editor for Apple Silicon Macs, built around one method: cull, balance, and apply a look, from the keyboard. It leaves a lot out on purpose.
What Aphera doesn't handle
We've made deliberate choices about what to build and what to skip. If you need any of these, consider the alternatives below:
-
Library management
Aphera works in projects that reference your photos on disk. There's no catalog, keywords, or search yet; a Catalog view is on the roadmap. For library management, consider Lightroom or Capture One.
-
Masking, healing, and retouching
Aphera's adjustments apply to the whole photo; masking is on the roadmap. Retouch exports in Pixelmator Pro, or use Lightroom, Capture One, or darktable for local RAW edits.
-
Cross-platform or mobile editing
Aphera runs only on Apple Silicon Macs. If you need Windows support or want to edit on iPad/iPhone, consider Lightroom or Photomator.
-
Layer-based compositing
Aphera focuses on global adjustments for photography workflows. For compositing and design work, consider Pixelmator Pro.
-
Studio tethering
We don't support tethered shooting. If you shoot tethered, consider Capture One.
-
AI-powered automation
Aphera provides intentional tools that require your judgment. If you prefer AI assistance for quick edits, Photomator or Darkroom offer it.
-
Free, open-source, or cross-platform editing
Aphera is paid, closed-source, and Mac only. If you want a free editor, need Linux/Windows support, or want deep module-level customization, darktable is worth a look.
-
Video editing or node-based color grading
Aphera is stills-only—no timelines, no video. If you need to grade footage or want node-based color tools, consider DaVinci Resolve.
