What photographers say
A lot of software removes distractions from photos. Aphera removes distractions from software, and it’s now the first and often last step in my workflow for sorting, selecting and editing photos.
I can rapidly cull my shots and apply adjustments with keyboard shortcuts without fidgeting endlessly with sliders.

- 3-year cost: $199–$397 depending on whether you continue updates
Aphera doesn't import Lightroom catalogs. Start new shoots in Aphera, and your Lightroom catalog stays as it is. Aphera works on photos where they are on disk and doesn't change the original files.
Performance & Speed
Lightroom Classic
Lightroom Classic has run natively on Apple Silicon since version 10.3 (June 2021), and uses the GPU for display, image processing, and export. Performance depends on catalog size, preview settings, and hardware.
Smart Previews and preview building speed up browsing and editing, at the cost of disk space and build time.
Aphera
Aphera runs only on Apple Silicon, with Metal processing throughout.
- Measured import — 100 100MP RAW files import in about a minute on an M2 Max
- Real-time adjustments — see changes as you make them on 100MP RAW files
- Browsing — page through thousands of RAWs from the keyboard
- Bulk operations — apply a look or adjustment to hundreds of photos at once
Workflow & User Experience
Lightroom Classic
Lightroom's interface reflects its history: modules (Library, Develop, Map, and more), each with its own panels. Your whole library lives in one catalog, a database Adobe provides backup and repair tools for.
- Dense interface with many panels and nested options
- Catalog-based organization (one database for your whole library)
- Primarily mouse-driven, with keyboard shortcuts added on top
- A large feature set that takes time to learn
Tools are spread across modules and panels.
Aphera
Controls are ordered broad to narrow: the biggest adjustments first, then refinements. The keyboard layout follows the same order.
- Keyboard-first design — left hand on Q-U controls all tonal adjustments (Exposure, Temperature, Tint, Contrast, Shadows, Highlights, Saturation) in every mode
- Projects, not a catalog — each project references your photos on disk; remove a project and your photos stay put
- Controls by mode — Grid has Balance and looks for culling and batch work; Develop has the full image pipeline
Projects are meant to be short-lived working sessions. Make one for a shoot, a trip, or a theme; projects can overlap, and removing one doesn't touch your photos.
Color Science & Image Quality
Lightroom Classic
Adobe's color science carries decades of legacy decisions, refined across thousands of camera profiles.
- Mature camera profile support across thousands of cameras
- Tone curves, Color Grading wheels, HSL, and calibration controls
- Third-party preset ecosystem for film looks
Lightroom includes Adobe's creative profiles and presets, and third-party presets are a common source of film looks. Presets copy values to each photo—updating a preset doesn't update photos that already use it.
Aphera
Photos look natural from the first frame, and looks add film character across a whole shoot. Underneath is a scene-referred pipeline: adjustments act on the light the camera recorded, before the image is formed.
Looks as References
Photos reference looks rather than copying values. Update a look and every photo using it updates automatically.
2499-DRT Formation System
Aphera's default image formation was designed by our color engineer to hold up across portraits, landscapes, architecture, foliage, colored light, and extreme lighting. Its controls include:
- Base Saturation — overall saturation before any other formation control
- Desaturate per primary (R/G/B) — pull individual primaries toward neutral independently
- Density of Highest Saturation — darkens the most saturated colors while near-neutral colors stay unchanged, mimicking dense film dyes
- Hue Shift + Specular Hue Shift (R/G/B) — rotate primaries globally and in highlights independently
Color Grading Tools
Aphera includes color grading tools from video and cinema workflows:
- Grading Layer — Gain/Power/Lift/Offset borrowed from video color grading, plus targeted Highlights/Shadows controls
- Film Response Layer — base curves like Cinema Negative, Classic Print, C Print, Instant Film with neutral tone controls and split toning
- Custom LUT support — use industry-standard .cube LUTs as image formations
Photometric Controls
Aphera's Balance controls (Exposure, Temperature, Tint, Saturation) are photometric—they operate on the scene's light values before image formation. Adjustments behave like changes at capture-time, not edits to a finished image. This preserves color relationships the way film does.
Culling & Organization
Lightroom Classic
Lightroom keeps stars, flags, and color labels as separate systems, so a photo can be 5-star rated and rejected at the same time.
- Multiple overlapping systems (stars, flags, colors)
- Stars and rejected are separate axes (can be 5-star + rejected)
- Keyboard shortcuts don't cover all culling operations
Aphera
Ratings follow the XMP Rating scale: three categories with no overlap.
- No Signal (0) — unrated photos
- Signal + Strength (1-5 stars) — all shown in Starred view, grouped by rating
- Rejected (-1) — hidden from all other views, like a soft delete
Use stars however you like: binary favorite (1-star only), multi-pass refinement (progressive), or project-specific meanings. Keys 1-5 set ratings, ~ clears, Option+Delete rejects.
